That's over a month of working hours spent commuting every year.

This tool calculates how many hours you spend commuting per year and, optionally, how much it costs in transport.

The daily commute feels routine until you add it up over a year. Forty minutes each way, five days a week, is over 270 hours a year. That's nearly seven standard working weeks spent in transit. This tool makes that number concrete, which is either motivating or deeply depressing depending on your circumstances.

How we work it out

One-way time is doubled for the return journey, then multiplied by your commute days per year. The work-weeks equivalent divides total hours by 40. Transport cost multiplies your daily fare by commute days. All figures are estimates based on a consistent schedule.

Questions

Should I include walking time to the station?

Yes, if it's time you would not otherwise spend. Door-to-door is the most honest number.

Is commuting time really "wasted"?

Not necessarily. People read, listen to podcasts, and decompress on commutes. But it is time you are not choosing to spend freely, and for most people that is the relevant distinction.

What about hybrid workers?

Set your days per week to match how often you actually go in. Two days a week means entering 2, and the annual figures will reflect that.

On the train? Got a few minutes? Perfect.
