Word Counter

Paste any text to count words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs. Check it against common platform limits.

0words
0characters
0chars (no spaces)
0sentences
0paragraphs

This tool counts words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in any text, with optional checks against common platform and format limits.

Whether you're trimming a meta description to fit Google's preview, keeping a tweet under 280 characters, or checking that an essay hits the word count, this gives you all the numbers at once. Select a preset to see a live bar showing how close you are to the target.

How we count

Words are counted by splitting on whitespace. Characters include spaces; "characters (no spaces)" strips them out first. Sentences are counted by the number of full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks in the text. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line.

Questions

Does Twitter actually count characters or words?

Characters. The 280-character limit applies to the full post text. URLs are always wrapped and counted as 23 characters regardless of their actual length, but this tool counts raw characters only.

What is the recommended meta description length?

Google typically displays up to around 155 to 160 characters in search results, though it varies by device and query. Staying under 155 characters is a safe target for most pages.

Can I check against a custom word or character target?

Not yet with a custom input, but the live counts update as you type, so you can keep an eye on the number directly. Custom preset support may be added later.
